Athletic Director - Nick Gehler
Nick Gehler is in his sixth year as director of athletics for San Diego Miramar College. He began his tenure in the summer of 2005.
During his time at Miramar College he has seen the Jets Athletic Department go from two teams to four intercollegiate teams and become competitive at the state level. In Gehler’s first year he started the planning and development of a men’s basketball team. In his second year that plan was implemented into the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference and the team saw their first competition in the winter of 2006. The team has sense gone onto state back-to-back tournament appearances and is regarded as one of the best teams in all of Southern California.
During the 2006 academic year Nick began planning and developing for a women’s soccer team and in the winter of 2006 the college hired Sean Bowers. Under the leadership of Gehler, Sean Bowers has built a soccer power house in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference as well as Southern California. In the third season of the program the Lady Jets made the state tournament.
The two existing programs at Miramar (Men’s and Women’s Water Polo) have been restored and look to be competitive this year and for years to come. The college hired Amy Mora Jennings and Robin Bregman to lead these two programs and the programs have developed well over the last couple years.
The Jets also excel in the classroom since Gehler’s arrival with the development of mentoring, academic checks, study table, and early alert tutoring. With these programs in place athletics has seen several student-athletes in the last few years graduate and move on to four year academic institutions as student-athletes.
Gehler had the great fortune of being involved on the ground floor design, build, and completion of the 54.000 square feet San Diego Miramar College Athletic Fieldhouse. The fieldhouse offers two classrooms, state-of-the-art athletic training room, team locker rooms, world class fitness center, and gymnasium (Four full courts).
Gehler is currently in the process of planning for future intercollegiate athletics teams. These teams would include women’s softball, women’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, and baseball.
Gehler is also in the process of implementing a San Diego Miramar College Athletic Hall-of-Fame.
Before coming to San Diego Miramar College Nick served as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Imperial Valley College from 2000 to 2005. Under his leadership the team saw state playoff appearances, two all-state players, as well as numerous student-athletes matriculate on to four year colleges.
Nick began his coaching career at Palomar College as an assistant coach. He later moved on to Mira Costa College where he served as an assistant coach under Clete Adelman and later under Pat Douglass at University of California, Irvine.
He and his wife, Tara, are the parents of Bailey, Charlie, and Samantha.
